Intentions Over Resolutions: A New Year’s Approach Rooted in Self-Love

Be easy on yourself. Do not rush to write down half-hearted resolutions and force accelerated change on your life. To resolve means to find a solution for a problem. You are not a problem. The way you showed up the past year was necessary for your growth to happen. Now is the time to pause. To reflect. To learn. To let go. To create an intention, a positive call to shift, rooted in self-love, backed with your action.

Happy New Year! I hope your 2025 is off to a healthy start. As we step into a new year, I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that’s been on my mind: intentions over resolutions.

Why Intentions?

I don’t subscribe to the typical “New Year, New You” mentality. While yes, it’s a new year, I believe you are already whole and complete just as you are. I’m sure you want to continue to set goals and grow but the best positive change comes from a place of love and acceptance. If you love and accept yourself as you are, than you are more likely to continue to take care of yourself and prioritize the things that bring you closer to your goals. If you’re coming from a place of negative self-talk or a mindset of “not enough” — the path forward is typically one of self-sabotage and burnout. Because if you’re in the habit of constantly beating yourself up, even if you reach your goals, you’ll likely find something else to criticize or focus on as 'not good enough.' The cycle continues, leaving you feeling unfulfilled and unable to truly celebrate your progress or happiness. That’s one of the many reasons I prefer choosing intentions over resolutions.

Setting Intentions: A Practice in Self-Love

I invite you to take a moment and reflect on your journey through 2024. Think about all the accomplishments you made—big and small—the challenges you faced, and the lessons you learned along the way. Celebrate your growth, not just in the victories but also in the messy, difficult, and beautiful moments. All of it played a role in shaping who you are today.

From this place of self-compassion, ask yourself: how do you want to feel today? Tomorrow? In the year ahead?

This is where the power of intentions comes in. Intentions are not about doing, achieving, or reaching a destination. They are about how you want to feel and show up in your life. They come from a place of self-love, which means there is no failure and more chance of success and contentment. You can revisit them every single day. And that’s what makes them so powerful—they are gentle and flexible.

Contrast this with resolutions, which often come from a mindset of lack, of something needing to change or “fix.” Intentions, on the other hand, are rooted in enough-ness. You don’t need to become a new person. You’re already whole. The question is: how do you want to experience your life moving forward? Start there, and let that intention fuel your goals with grace and ease.
