What is a Health Coach Anyway?

Growing up… Did you ever have a sports coach who kept you motivated and helped shape you into a stronger athlete? Or, maybe it was a dance or art teacher who challenged you in different ways and helped lift your art to new levels? Whatever sport or passion you had (or still have!), you had a coach or mentor to thank for part of your success and confidence gained. That coach wasn’t an authority or necessarily an expert. A Health Coach is very similar.

Imagine I am your Health Coach. I am your guide on the side. The person who can see your performance with a neutral set of eyes. The person who can see your habit styles, even the slightest shifts, from the outside looking in. I am here to give you accurate information on nutrition and, even more importantly, I’m here to inspire, support and cheer you on.

When you have real support, guidance, and accountability - magic happens. Goals are met. This is why coaching works. Why shouldn’t we apply that concept to our health? Your health and fitness goals are important. In my opinion, they should be #1. For if you don't have your health, you have nothing.

Now you might be thinking... "OK, so I understand you are a coach in health but what exactly will we do in the 6 Month Health Coaching Program?”

As your Health Coach, I will meet you exactly where you’re at with food and lifestyle. We will work together to create solid goals for your health that align with your true self and future vision. We will discuss nutrition -- debunk the myths, find the superfoods that meet your unique needs, and design a flexible meal plan that fits into your lifestyle. A plan filled with food you love to eat and food that will propel you forward toward your goals.

As my nutrition school teacher always says, “One person’s food is another person’s poison.” In other words, what works for one person does not work for another. Our bodies are far too unique for that level of simplicity. Have you ever met a person who looks just like you? We all need to realize that our cellular makeup and biochemistry are different on the inside too. While one person may thrive on animal protein, another may do better with a plant-based diet.

By paying attention to your body’s reaction to hunger, cravings, energy, mood and sleep - we will crack YOUR unique fat loss code that will get you to where you want to be physically and mentally. And with less effort than any fad diet.

My health coaching approach is to implement small, manageable changes every two weeks that will naturally crowd out the nutrient-void foods (mostly junk/fast food!) and allow you to find a stress-free relationship with food. No crazy diets or harsh restrictions.

Of course we will work on nutrition but we will also dive into your “Primary Foods” - things like relationships, exercise, career and spirituality. The things that nourish us that don’t come on a plate. Every new client I meet with wants to work on diet (what I call “Secondary Food”). They usually want to lose weight, eliminate sugar cravings, and learn how to eat clean long-term. We will definitely work on that! But, often times with those late night binges, it’s not the food that is the problem. The food is the symptom of something else that is out of balance in your life. It could be a stressful job that leads you straight to the snack cabinet around 6 PM and then again at 10 PM, or a toxic relationship that is weighing you down and making you feel like you are not good enough. It can also be the lack of making time for you - to recharge, to do what you love - which always brings your life back into balance.

When your Primary Foods are sorted out (when aspects of your everyday life are in balance), the food on our plate becomes secondary. Our bodies and our minds become more clear. We are finally able to make the right choices in life and in our diet that support and energize us. With ease.  

As your health coach, I promise to provide a warm and safe space for you to talk about the things that are weighing you down. Junk food or junk relationships -- anything goes. For when our life is in good balance for us, everything else feels effortless. Life is too short and too precious to fight through by yourself.
