Staying Balanced While Traveling: My Top 5 Tips for Enjoying Your Vacation
Travel is all about exploration, relaxation, and indulging in new experiences — especially when it comes to food. Vacations are meant to be enjoyable, and that includes indulging here and there. But, as much as I love to indulge, I also believe in staying balanced so I can feel my best while making the most of my trip.
Here are my 5 Tips for staying balanced while traveling:
Here are a few tips that I always use when I’m traveling or on vacation to stay balanced, without missing out on any of the fun:
1. Make half your plate veggies!
I call this "crowding-in." It’s about adding more nutrient-dense foods to your plate to balance out that more indulgent foods that can make you feel like crap the next day. When traveling, this simple trick also helps me avoid overeating which always comes with the post-meal slump. I also love to order a salad or broth-based vegetable soup before my meal and order some delicious veggie sides to up my veggie intake. Give the “half plate veggies” strategy a try and let me know if you feel less overstuffed and more energized.
2. Plate your dessert, sit down, and savor it.
I used to think I “shouldn’t” eat dessert but then I’d go back to the hotel room and eat the kids candy or random snacks I didn’t even want. Learning about mindful eating changed how I look at food and therefore how I “treat” myself. Now, before I indulge in a treat, I check in with myself and ask questions like “What do I want? What do I need? What would be most supportive right now?” Sometimes the answer is dessert and sometimes I see that I am full, satisfied and content with ending the meal. Mindful eating is all about being fully present with your food without judgement or criticism. By giving yourself full permission to just enjoy your dessert, you notice the flavors and are more satisfied in the end.
3. Start your day with a savory, high-protein breakfast.
When traveling, I always prioritize a breakfast that sets me up for the day. Aim for 25–35 grams of protein to keep your blood sugar balanced and savory vs. sweet to help you avoid sugar and refined carb cravings later. My go-to options while on vacation are things like a vegetable omelet, eggs with avocado or a hearty breakfast bowl with protein-rich options. And trust me, skipping breakfast to “save calories” just isn’t the move — it always backfires and leaves me feeling ravenous by lunchtime!
4. Stay hydrated – water is key!
Water is always important, but especially so when traveling. Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially with jet lag, alcohol, or spending time in hot climates. I always make sure to drink plenty of water during my trip and sip between alcoholic beverages to stay balanced and avoid feeling sluggish the next day. It’s the simplest, most underrated way to keep your energy up!
5. Prioritize relaxation and fun.
Vacation is as much about mental rest as it is about food and activities. Finding time to unwind, laugh, and simply enjoy the present moment is key. Low-stress levels help regulate hunger and cravings, support fat loss, and keep you feeling grounded. Whether it's lounging by the pool, exploring a new city, or just taking a nap, relaxation is essential to making the most of your trip — without guilt.
Traveling and vacations should be an enjoyable escape, and with a few simple, intentional practices, you can experience all the joy of the moment while also feeling great in your body. Here’s to feeling balanced and rejuvenated, no matter where you are!
